Quebec MP up in arms over 'outrageous' firearms fete
By Jeff Davis, Postmedia News April 20, 2012
NDP MP Francoise Boivin says the Canadian Sports Shooting Association is provoking Quebecers by holding its annual dinner and dance in her Gatineau, Que., riding.
The Stick to Your Guns event, advertised as the first "dead registry" celebration, is being held in Quebec "as a show of support for the long-awaited demise of the long-gun registry."
"We're bringing the celebration to Quebec as a reminder that sport shooters in that province deserve the same firearms freedom as everyone else in the country," CSSA executive director Tony Bernardo said in an advertisement. "There seems to be a twisted logic among Quebec voters that keeping the registry will somehow make them safer.
"We're inviting everyone who believes in basic freedoms to join the CSSA in Gatineau."
The event will be held at a Gatineau conference centre on April 28 and is billed as being "tactical, practical and fantastical."
The CSSA has been holding the Stick to Your Guns evenings for a number of years, and it is the largest fundraising event for the shooters association.
Boivin called the CSSA's decision to hold the event in Quebec — where support for strict gun control is strongest — "totally outrageous."
"It's trying to provoke," she said. "It's to insert themselves into a debate still prevailing in Quebec."
The CSSA is unlikely to sway public opinion in Quebec, which Boivin said is deeply committed to gun control since the 1989 Montreal Massacre and the more recent Dawson College shootings in the province.
"I think they want to send a message to province of Quebec that they're there, they're observing," Boivin said. "But I think they just don't understand the position of the people who are not of their view."
Last year, the event was held in Oshawa, Ont., and was attended by a number of Conservative MPs. These included Oshawa MP Colin Carrie, Ajax-Pickering MP Chris Alexander and Saskatchewan MP Garry Breitkreuz, who has been the Tory point-man on firearms issues and the push to repeal the long-gun registry.
Breitkreuz will deliver the keynote speech this year, on the topic of "possible options for future firearms legislation in Canada."
Before the gala evening begins, the advertisement says, the CSSA will hold its annual general meeting, then members will go on a tour of Parliament Hill in neighbouring Ottawa "as a tribute to the excellent job the current government is doing for responsible gun owners."
Sponsors of last year's event — which included a live gun auction — were firearms manufacturer Stoeger Canada, ammunition maker Hornady and a number of hunting supply stores.
Boivin was not aware of the event until informed by Postmedia News, and she said she thinks few of her constituents will attend.
On Friday, a Quebec superior court extended an injunction stopping the government from destroying the data within the Long Gun Registry database until June, when the case will be heard.
Given this development, Boivin said, "it's a bit premature to start celebrating."
Despite her opposition to their politics, Boivin said CSSA members are welcome to come and spend their money in her riding.
