OTTAWA - Public Safety Minister Vic Toews promises action "within days" to end so-called backdoor long-gun registries across Canada.
"A minister and a government acts through legislation or through regulations and that's what's being set up right now," Toews said Wednesday. "And that will be announced very, very shortly."
For months, Toews has been under pressure to stamp out provincial chief firearms officers' paper ledgers in gun shops. The ledgers record most of the same information about the sale of long guns as the now-abolished federal registry.
Despite public calls from Toews and a letter from RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson to all chief firearms officers to eliminate "any form" of registry for unrestricted rifles and shotguns, gun shop ledgers persisted in most provinces.
New Brunswick is the only province that fell into line and officially announced an end to its ledgers last month.
The issue has gained new urgency as summer hunting picks up and long-gun owners push for an end to the stigma around their sport.
